9mobile Set to Recover 22 Million Subscribers as Roaming With MTN Starts

9mobile users across Nigeria will once again get full national coverage, thanks to a roaming agreement with MTN that’s just been approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Here’s the situation: 9mobile dropped from around 24 million subscribers to just 2 million. With MTN’s network support, they’re hoping to get most of those 22 million customers back before the end of July.

At the launch in Lagos, 9mobile CEO Obafemi Banigbe emphasized the plan is a three-year deal. He said the idea is simple, “build where we must, share where we can” and this roaming deal fits right in.

MTN’s side is represented by Chief Enterprise Officer Linda Saint Nwafor, who confirmed that roaming is live in Lagos with test runs in other states. Full rollout across MTN’s footprint is expected by month’s end. She also thanked the NCC and Minister Tijani for pushing the deal through
