MultiChoice Nigeria has been hit with a ₦766,242,500 fine by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) for violating the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
The violations include processing personal data from subscribers and even non-subscribers, without proper consent, and transferring that data out of Nigeria unlawfully.
The fine concludes an investigation that started in the second quarter of 2024, led by the NDPC’s Head of Legal, Babatunde Bamigboye.
Investigators described MultiChoice’s data handling practices as “unfair and unnecessary” calling them a serious breach of privacy rights under Nigeria’s Constitution.
Though the commission previously asked MultiChoice to fix these issues, their efforts were deemed insufficient. That prompted the hefty penalty.
NDPC also ordered a full compliance audit of all platforms through which MultiChoice collects Nigerian users’ data. Any outlets found still in breach could face further penalties.
